More about Al-Gazoulia

Al-Tariqa Al-Gazoulia is a living Sufi tradition deeply rooted in Islamic spiritual heritage. Founded in Egypt in 1950 by Grand Sheikh Gaber Al-Gazouly and currently led by Sheikh Salem Al-Gazouly, the Tariqa expresses its devotion through zikr, poetry, sacred music, and communal ritual. To share this heritage with a broader audience, Sheikh Salem formed the Al-Gazoulia Ensemble, giving artistic expression to their ancient spiritual path.

At the heart of the Gazoulia experience is zikr—the rhythmic remembrance of the Divine. Through sacred incantations, collective chanting, and shared presence, music transcends mere sound to become a language of the heart and a gateway from the material world to the unseen. This spiritual journey often evokes wajd (ecstatic devotion) and can culminate in fana—the dissolution of the self in the presence of the Divine.

Beyond ritual, Al-Gazoulia is an immersive realm of poetry, wonder, and mystery, where life and death are not viewed as opposing forces. Here, poetry gives voice to the unutterable, music creates a sanctuary for contemplation, and death is understood not as the end of life but as transformation and a return to the Divine.

More about the lecture

Beyond Equal Temperament: Lithuanian Folk Scales, New Music, and Colour

What did Lithuanian folk music really sound like a century ago? And what can microtonal intervals hidden in historical recordings tell us about the musical traditions of the past?

In this lecture, composer and researcher Vytautas Germanavičius explores the fascinating world of Lithuanian folk scales beyond the familiar 12-tone equal temperament. Through archival recordings, microtonal analysis, and examples from traditional vocal and instrumental music, he reveals unequal intervals and natural tuning relationships that have often remained invisible in conventional transcriptions.

The lecture then moves from research to composition, showing how these ancient pitch structures have inspired new contemporary works. Finally, it opens an unexpected new perspective: could the intervals of Lithuanian folk songs be connected with the colours and ornaments of traditional textiles? This new research brings together music, visual culture, perception, and artificial intelligence in a search for possible connections between sound and colour.

Cairo-born composer and oud player Hossam Mahmoud, who wrote two operas for the Salzburg State Theatre as well as works for the Salzburg Festival, opens a window onto the ancient, emotional world of Egyptian music and its maqams. Tradition and improvisation meet, as do Orient and Occident—in the spirit of the West-Eastern Divan. He is joined by Frank Stadler, who has had the opportunity to learn from his art in recent years.
